Myofascial-Yin and The Five Elements

In the October (Summer) program of Bali Sunday, we focused our study mainly on the physical aspects of our body. Through Myofascial Release (MFR) and Yin Yoga practice, we explored the myofascia and its continuity in relation to movements.

In the November (Winter) season of Bali Sunday we’re going to deepen our exploration by adding knowledge and awareness of the energetic aspect of the body. This is where we will incorporate the study of five elements according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) into our MFR and Yin Yoga practice.

The study of five elements of TCM focuses largely on the organs and their energetic pathways as one integrated system of qi (the intelligent organisational electricity of the body) circulation. How the qi flows in this system will determine one’s physical and mental health.

Interestingly enough the qi pathways also known as channels (commonly mistranslated as ‘meridians’) would remind you of the various fascia continuities that we explored in the previous Bali Sunday. For instance, the superficial back line fascia (partially) follows the urinary bladder channel (Water Element), while the stomach and spleen pathway (Earth Element) has a resemblance with the fascia continuity of the front side of our body. How fascinating!

This is what we are going to explore in our next classes: the relationship between the five elements (the organs, channels, their physiology and pathology) and MFR and Yin practice.

The November program is composed of five Sunday classes of 75 minutes each. However, the first class might be a little longer (up to 90 minutes) as we will establish a basic understanding of a few main concepts of the elements for the entire season. The classes are scheduled in accordance to “the mother and son” (inter-promoting) relationship between the elements:

November 1st: Water (Kidney, Urinary Bladder)

November 8th: Wood (Liver, Gallbladder)

November 15th: Fire (Heart, Small Intestine)

November 22nd: Earth (Spleen, Stomach)

November 29th: Metal (Lung, Large Intestine).

The classes will take form of a mini workshop in which theories (in Power Point presentations) will be presented together with the usual MFR and Yin practice.

The recording of the classes will be available for access for five days. This would give you enough time to revisit the practice if you wish.

Since the five element are inseparable, the best way to make the most of the program is to join the all five classes.

In the spirit of togetherness in this challenging time, I decided to keep the classes on donation based. I will also gladly accept your good wishes and prayers if you’re unable to contribute financially.

Like the previous Bali Sunday, a portion of your financial donation will be shared with local Balinese/ Indonesian who’ve lost their incomes due to the pandemic.
